František Kaván

1866 – 1941

František Kaván was one of the leading personalities of the Mařák's school of landscape painting and together with his fellow student, especially with Antonín Slavíček and Otakar Lebeda, he laid the foundations of the realistic landscape painting in our lands. After a brief Symbolist period, he was, afer 1905, focusing on a plein-air landscape painting with the accent on the faithful representation of atmospheric effects in landscape. His work is connected to his home region - he was above all depicting the region of Krkonoše mountains, but he was also painting the Highlands Region and the Iron Mountains
