1628 – 1682
Dutch painter who was born in the family of an art dealer. He learnt to paint from his father and was also greatly influenced by his uncle Solomon. In 1648 he entered the guild of painters of St. Luke in Haarlem. In 1655 he settled in Amsterdam where he established his own painting workshop. His landscape painting style was very dramatic and he was able to use sensitively natural colours and to create excellent compositions. His art influenced numerous emerging Dutch landscape painters. He was also admired by Goethe who described him as the poet among painters.
