The leading Czech Cubist sculptor, Gutfreund studied at the Academy of Fine Artists in Prague and the Grande Chaumiere in Paris with E.A. Bourdell. Before and during the First World War, his creative output fully develops Cubism that, in some of his works reached as far as Constructivism. Together with E. Filla he was the first sculptor who thoroughly applied the principles of Cubism - the penetration of volume into space. Apart from smaller sculptures he also created monumental works (the monument of Božena Němcová's famous "Babička" (Grandmother) in Ratibořice).
